The axolotl , a salamander found in Lake Patzcuaro, has become popular as of late. Close to extinction due to loss of habitat, climate change and pollution, these salamanders are bred for use in the making cough syrup by Dominican nuns in the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud .
In the past the Axolotl was sold in the market in Patzcuaro.
